Nova Scotia Folk artist Shelly Atkinson

Born in Halifax, Nova Scotia, artist Shelly Atkinson now lives in Truro, Nova Scotia with her husband Earle, and son Matthew. Shelly began her artistic career in 1990 after much encouragement from her family and friends.

A self taught artist, Shelly offers a large variety of art styles. "I enjoy experimenting with various styles, colors, textures and techniques. I am forever learning." It wasn't until Shelly was diagnosed with breast cancer at 46 and underwent a Lumpectomy that she started creating her textured healing hearts and humourous women art. "It was a therapeutic healing process that I needed to go through which helped me during a very difficult time in my life. I prefer to keep my paintings uncomplicated, and usually never know what I am going to paint until my paint hits the canvas, but as the colors begin to flow, a story begins to unfold."

Her paintings can be found in numerous private and public collections around the world. Shelly recently had the opportunity to illustrate a children's book entitled, "Good Night Flying Cows". It was such a wonderful experience for me and I hope to be able to illustrate some more for children's books. Should you want something especially created for you, Shelly loves doing commission work, and will create paintings any size to suit all budgets!
