Fine art pencil drawings. History of drawings. Links to ordering.

Welcome to my gallery of realistic graphite drawings. I was born with the ability to produce photorealistic pencil drawings and have received no formal artistic training. I invest as many as 200 hours creating each drawing in order to obtain the realism look you see. Take the time to view each of my drawings closely and read about the history of my art. You can purchase your favorite fine art original pencil drawing, limited edition print, or postcard in our order section.

pencil drawing - Jacob's ladder

Title:
Jacob's Ladder

Original Size: 12.5" x 15"
Medium: pencil drawing
Year created: 2007
Hours to complete: 200

This graphite drawing is my most recent creation and is a well known landmark in Truro, Nova Scotia. Jacob's Ladder is found in Victoria Park, a 400 acre park located in the centre of town, and is comprised of 175 steps, which are built into the side of a gorge. I love the perspective in this drawing. I had a difficult time completing the trees and eventually had to step away for a month before finally feeling refreshed enough to finish.

drawing - pregnant mother

Title: The Miracle
Original Size: 8.5" x 13"
Medium: graphite drawing
Year created: 2007
Hours to complete: 140

This realistic drawing was part of the series of drawings created in early 2007 in which I began to learn new techniques for improving my art. I did this piece as a gift to my wife for Christmas and time was running short before the December 25th deadline. I had to figure out how to draw more quickly and unconsciously took a different approach. The result was a great drawing in fewer hours then I was used to. This is a sketch of my wife who was pregnant with her first child, my stepdaughter, and is one of the more meaningful pencil drawings to me. Almost one year after completing this drawing, my wife became pregnant with our first child together.

Title: Self Reflection
Original Size: 10" x 12"
Medium: pencil sketch
Year created: 2004
Hours to complete: 160

My mother took the photo of this pencil drawing in 2004. She beautifully captured the reflection of my niece looking back her as she peers out the window. I often find myself wondering what it is she is so focused on. There is still a part of me that yearns to be a child again because everything seemed so wonderful and mysterious. In 2007 I put together back to back art shows and raised $800 with the help of this sketch for the CNIB (Canadian Institute for the Blind).

Title: Hand in hand
Original Size: 8.5" x 11"
Medium: pencil drawing
Year created: 2001
Hours to complete: 160

Of all my pencil drawings this one taught me the most about life. These are my grandparents who were separated for most of their married life and lived in different provinces. My grandmother, who I grew up with, passed away from Alzheimer's after a three year struggle at home with our family. I did my share of helping to care for her during that time and learned a lot about looking after those who can no longer care for themselves. My grandfather moved back home a couple years after my grandmother died, and passed away shortly after as well. This image was taken on one of the rare times they were able to visit each other.

Title: A run in the sun
Original Size: 10" x 12"
Medium: graphite drawing
Year created: 2007
Hours to complete: 125

The original photo for this graphite drawing came from an award winning image taken by my mother in early 2007. It's my nephew running around the beach at our cottage in Brule, Nova Scotia. Remember the days when you could run around naked and people would think it was cute, rather then laugh at you? No, me neither. But I love the innocence of this pencil sketch and it reminds me of what it was like to be totally free as children are.

pencil sketch - Historic Properties

order graphite drawing

Title: Historic Properties
Original Size: 8" x 11.5"
Medium: pencil drawing
Year created: 2001
Hours to complete: 185

Historic Properties dates back to 1749, when Halifax was founded, and represents Canada's oldest surviving waterfront warehouses. I love the city of Halifax and cut my teeth there as an artist selling my pencil drawings on the Nova Scotia waterfront. Part of what I enjoy about the city is the European style architecture. This sketch was done during the first year of my art career and was my first attempt at architecture.

Title: Go out on a limb
Original Size: 12" x 16"
Medium: graphite drawing
Year created: 2002
Hours to complete: 180

I've always associated strongly with this pencil sketch. This piece was completed early in my art career when life lessons were being learned at a very quick rate. I felt I had no oar nor boat to navigate these new art career waters. However, even when I felt I was losing the battles, I always found a way to get back up and figure out how to move forward. I feel this pencil drawing speaks to my need to "go out on a limb" and not be afraid of falling down, which still resonates today. I took the original photo in my back yard while playing with my nephews on a beautiful summer day and it remains one of my favorites.

sketch - seascape

order drawing

Title: Two with a view
Original Size:
 8" x 15"
Medium: pencil drawing
Year created: 2002
Hours to complete: 125

This pencil drawing is from a photograph taken in Ingonish, Cape Breton Nova Scotia. The odd way the birds are positioned on the boat caught my attention so I set out to make this my very first seascape. I love how the seagulls seem as though they've taken over the area and there are no humans to be found for miles. It reminds me of an "Animal Farm" situation brewing. This was my first attempt at drawing water, which I found to be a fun challenge.

drawings - railway trains

order drawing

Title: Around the bend
Original Size: 8" x 16"
Medium: pencil sketch
Year created: 2002
Hours to complete: 200

This pencil drawing was the first sketch that showed me the possibilities of my talent. It was easily my best artwork at that time and garnered me my first article and attention from a magazine. The bottom part of the image, where the rocks are resting on the wood, is my favorite area of the drawing. I lived most of my life near the tracks in Truro so this has great significance to me as a person. The idea came from one of my best friends who also grew up near the railroad.

Canadian Loon - pencil drawing

Title: Canadian Loon
Original Size: 9" x 15"
Medium: pencil drawing
Year created: 2002
Hours to complete: 180

This graphite drawing came at a steep price but taught me a great business lesson. This was one of the very first commission drawings I did and I received $300 for the completed original. Not to bad for a new artist, but considering the drawing took almost 200 hours to complete it turns out I made close to $1.50 an hour. This was a good introduction into the business side of art and I soon learned to charge what I was worth because of it.

Title: Don't hit the rim
Original Size: 8" x 15"
Medium: pencil drawing
Year created: 2004
Hours to complete: 120

This is a very popular drawing with parents of young children. The photo for this graphite drawing was taken by sister while her son was learning his way around a toilet. I'm soon going to be having my first child and I think these sorts of experiences are going to be commonplace. Heck, I remember when I was learning my way around a toilet as well. Seems like it was more fun creating the mess then cleaning it up.

pencil drawing - beach

order drawing

Title: Time Away
Original Size: 10" x 15"
Medium: pencil drawing
Year created: 2003
Hours to complete: 125

I love the way the sun shimmers off the water in this pencil drawing. This was my second attempt at creating water but I had to approach it in a completely different way then before. It was a tedious process because of the tiny shapes needed to be drawn in order to create this illusion. The debate in my family is whether this is my father or my brother in law carrying the boat. Honestly, I'm not sure who it is.

Nutby house - pencil drawing

order drawing

Title: Nuttby House
Original Size: 10" x 16"
Medium: graphite drawing
Year created: 2004
Hours to complete: 110

This old house is a well photographed landmark in Nova Scotia. It always appeared ready to fall over the last decade but has stood like a rock for over 100 years. Sadly, all things have an ending and it finally fell down in early 2006 of natural causes. This building sat in an open field withstanding age, hurricanes and major snowstorms and drew visitors from around the world.

The Mirage pencil drawings

order drawing

Title: The Mirage
Original Size: 9" x 15"
Medium: pencil sketch
Year created: 2003
Hours to complete: 160

This drawing is my nephew with his mom at the beach during on a beautiful summer day. My sister took the photo and captured a very visually interesting image of their shadows. The identity, and even genders of the subjects are hidden but the bond between the two is unmistakable. I actually became lazy sketching the sand in the background of this drawing. It was supposed to go all the way to the top of the image but I left it where it was and in the end I'm happy I did. It's created the feel of the water coming up the sand in the background.

Title: Practice makes perfect
Original Size: 8" x 15 1/2"
Medium: pencil sketch
Year created: 2005
Hours to complete: 110

Don't tell my Dad I've put this pencil drawing on my website. He's not a big fan of this piece because it doesn't shine a great light on the swing he's "perfected" over the last 20 years. However, I loved the original photograph and it looks like a perfect swing to me.

kiwanis park sketch

order pencil drawing

Title: Kiwanis Park
Original Size: 5" x 15"
Medium: pencil sketch
Year created: 2001
Hours to complete: 110

Kiwanis park is the first drawing I produced in my artistic career. It came out of nowhere to show me what was possible as an artist. It came 14 years after producing my last drawing during my childhood.

train station drawing

Title: Truro Railway Station
Original Size: 16" x 24"
Medium: pencil drawing
Year created: 2004
Hours to complete: 180

This drawing was done as an exchange of marketing space in the town newspaper. I offered to draw an original drawing for there office in exchange for $2000 in newspaper space to market my upcoming Christmas show. They agreed and I feel the risk paid off as my show was very successful with a great turnout.
