Jacob's Ladder

Jacob's ladder is a well known landmark in Truro, Nova Scotia. Located in beautiful Victoria Park, it's comprised of 175 steps, which are built into the side of a gorge. I love the perspective in this drawing. The original photo included my step daughter climbing her way to the top. I contemplated whether or not to include her but in the end decided against it. I had a difficult time completing the trees and eventually had to step away for a month before finally returning to finish the drawing.

The Miracle

This is a drawing of my wife. It was part of a series of drawings I created in early 2007 in which I learned new techniques for improving my art. I did this piece as a gift to her for Christmas but to make the December 25th deadline, I had to figure out how to draw more quickly and unconsciously tried a new technique. The result was a great drawing in less hours then normal.

Self Reflection

My mother took the original photo for this drawing in early 2004. She beautifully captured the reflection of my then four year old niece looking out of the window. It's easy to get caught up wondering what it is she must be thinking. In 2007 I put together back to back art shows raising money for the CNIB (Canadian Institute for the Blind) by donating the original drawing. It was tough to let go but was worth it in the end.

Hand in hand

Of the pencil drawings I've done this has the most meaning. These are my grandparents. They were separated for most of their married life and living 2000 miles away from one another. My grandmother, who I grew up with, passed away from Alzheimer's after a three year struggle at home with our family. I did my share of helping to care for her during that time and learned a lot about looking after those who can no longer care for themselves. My grandfather moved back home a couple years after my grandmother died and passed away shortly after as well. This image was taken on the rare time they were able to visit one another. Caring for a loved one at home is not easy. I greatly respect anyone who has made this sacrifice for a family member.

A run in the sun

The original photo for this drawing was shot by my mother in 2006. This is my nephew running around the beach in Brule, Nova Scotia. I love the innocence of this image. It reminds me of what it must be like to be totally free like an infant. There are no games, no manipulation and you can take your clothes off and run around naked. Now that is life.

Historic Properties

Historic Properties dates back to 1749, when Halifax was founded, and represents Canada's oldest surviving waterfront warehouses. I love the city of Halifax and cut my teeth there as an artist selling my pencil drawings on the Nova Scotia waterfront. Part of what I enjoy about the city is the European style architecture. This sketch was done during the first year of my art career and was my first attempt at architecture.

Go out on a limb

I associate very strongly with this pencil drawing. This piece was completed early in my career when life lessons were being learned at a very quick rate. I felt when I was losing the business battles I always found a way to get back up and figure out how to move forward. This drawing speaks to my need to "go out on a limb" and to not be afraid of falling down. I took the original photo in my back yard while playing with my nephews on a beautiful summer day and it remains one of my favorites.

Two with a view

This pencil drawing is from a photograph taken in Ingonish, Cape Breton Nova Scotia. The odd way the birds are positioned on the boat caught my attention, so I set out to make this my very first seascape. I love how the seagulls seem as though they've taken over the area and no humans are found for miles. It reminds me of an "Animal Farm" situation brewing.

Around the bend

This drawing was the first sketch that showed me the possibilities of my talent. It was easily my best artwork at that time and garnered attention from magazines and newspapers. The bottom part of the image where the rocks are resting on the wood is my favorite area of the drawing. I lived most of my life near the tracks in Truro so this has great significance to me. The idea came from one of my best friends who also grew up near the railroad.

Canadian Loon

This sketch came at a steep price but taught me a great business lesson. This was one of the very first commission drawings I did and received $300 for the complete original. Not bad, until you consider it took almost 200 hours to complete. I hear the calculators going now...yes that is about $1.50 a hour. This was a good introduction into the business side of art and soon learned to charge what I was worth.

Don't hit the rim

The photo for this graphite drawing was taken by sister while her son was learning his way around a toilet. I'm soon going to be having these experiences with my own 9 month old boy. Heck, I remember when I was learning my way around a toilet as well. Seems like it was more fun creating the mess then it is cleaning it up.

Nuttby House

The Nuttby house is a well photographed landmark in Nova Scotia. It has appeared ready to fall over the last decade but has stood like a rock for over 100 years. Sadly, all things have an ending and it finally fell down in early 2006 of natural causes. This building sat in an open field withstanding age, hurricanes and major snowstorms and drew visitors from around the world.

The Mirage

This drawing is my nephew and his mom during on a beautiful summer day at the beach. My sister took the photo and captured a visually interesting image of their shadows. The identity, and even genders of the subjects are hidden but the bond between the two is unmistakable. I actually became lazy sketching the sand in the background of this drawing. It was supposed to go all the way to the top. It's created the feel of the water coming up the sand in the background.
